Ride-out Information

"Ride-outs" consist of spending time at the fire station and responding on the apparatus to actual emergencies. Ride-outs are not required, but at least one ride-out for a period of four to five hours is highly encouraged. This is a great opportunity to gain a true understanding of the emergency services provided, as well as an opportunity to observe what firefighters do when not responding to emergencies.

Emergency responses make up only a part of the firefighter's day. When not responding to emergencies, firefighters perform business inspections, public education programs, medical billing, apparatus and equipment maintenance, and continuing education training, to name only a few activities. And no day goes by without performing station duties and cooking meals. Don't hesitate to join in on the activities.

For safety reasons, the "riders" are to OBSERVE ONLY at emergency scenes. On medical calls, you will not have any direct contact with the patients. On the fire ground, you will observe alloperations from a safe zone established by the Fire Officer. You will be expected to follow all rules and regulations set forth by the Fire Department and the Officer in command of the incident.

Sign-up sheets willbe available at the start of Week Thre, and each week thereafter, for participants to schedule ride-outs. Ride-outs for increments of up to twelve hours will be arranged between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Scheduling more than one ride-out is permissable.

Ride-out participants should wear the Citizens Fire Academy shirt, comfortable pants or jeans, closed-toe footwear with good traction or slip resistant soles, and name badges that will be provided to you.
