Physical Ability Test
The physical ability test is designed to simulate the activities typically performed on the fireground. The aerial ladder climb is a separately timed event. The remaining events (Charged Hose Advance, Supply Line Pull, Salvage Cover Carry, Hose Loading and Stacking, Hose Couple and Chopping Movement, and Dummy Drag) are continuously timed events. The overall test is designed to test the applicants endurance and ability to perform the essential functions of a firefighter.
Initial Event:
Aerial Ladder Climb:
Applicant must climb and descend a 75 Ft. aerial at a 75 degree angle, without stopping to rest. No time limit.
Continuously Timed Events: (7-Minute Time Limit)
Charged Hose Advance:
Applicant must advance a charged 1 3/4 inch hose 100 feet in a forward continuous motion.
Supply Line Pull:
The applicant will pick up both a 40 pound humat valve attached to 100 feet of 5-inch supply line. The applicant will advance the 5-inch supply line, with Humat valve attached, a distance of 100 feet in a forward continuous motion.
Salvage Cover Carry:
The applicant will pick up two 30 pound salvage covers and carry them a distance of 100 feet.
Hose Loading and Stacking:
Applicant must pick-up ten sections of hose (2 ½ inch) one at a time and stack in two separate stacks on the ground, containing 5 section each. Applicant must then lift hose sections to their original position.
Hose Couple and Chopping Movement:
Applicant must couple 3 sections of hose, then pickup sledge hammer at the end of the third section of hose and strike pad 50 times. After striking pad 50 times put the sledge hammer down and pickup the end of the third section of hose and drag all three sections 50 feet.
Victim Rescue:
Applicant must walk 100 feet to location of dummy, pick up dummy and drag dummy backwards for 75 feet.
All applicants will be required to wear helmet, bunker coat and gloves which will be provided by the Pantego Fire Department if needed. An airpack will also be required and will be provided by the Pantego Fire Department. Long pants of the applicants choice (bunkers, jeans, sweats, etc.) and closed toe shoes (boots, running shoes, etc.) will be required and must be provided by the applicant.
